WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND THERAPY?

Counselling and therapy are two different forms of mental health treatment.

Counselling will usually involve short-term meetings with a professional who will provide support and guidance for specific issues, such as grief, stress, or relationship problems. Often it is focused on problem-solving, providing you with coping strategies and helping you to make positive changes in your life.

Therapy, on the other hand, is usually a longer-term treatment used to address more deep-seated, emotional and psychological challenges. If you undertake therapy, your therapist will work with you to identify any underlying issues, explore patterns in your behaviour and help you to develop new ways of thinking and coping with whatever is troubling you. Therapy can be used to treat a number of conditions such as PTSD, depression and anxiety, amongst others.

Although counselling and therapy both involve a professional helping their client to work through whatever mental health concerns may be troubling them, there are some key differences in terms of goals, length of treatment and techniques which are used.
