What counselling is not

Counselling is a professional and confidential service that can be a helpful tool for addressing a wide range of emotional, psychological, and behavioural issues. However, it's also important to understand what counselling is not:

  • Counselling is not a magic solution: Counselling is not a quick fix, and it requires effort and commitment from the individual. It may take time and consistent effort to see progress and achieve goals long term.

  • Counselling is not the same as advice-giving: A counsellor's role is not to tell you what to do, but to help you explore your thoughts and feelings, and to empower you to make your own decisions.

  • Counselling is not only for people with serious problems: Counselling can be beneficial for people dealing with a wide range of issues, big or small. It is not only for people with serious mental health conditions: anyone can benefit from counselling.

  • Counselling is not one-size-fits-all: There are many different approaches to counselling and different techniques that may be more effective for different individuals and issues.

  • Counselling is not only done face-to-face: Counselling can be done in different forms, such as online or over the phone, it's not limited to face-to-face sessions.

  • Counselling is not just for adults: Counselling can be beneficial for people of all ages, including children, adolescents, and older adults.

It's important to have realistic expectations about what counselling can and cannot do and to communicate your needs and concerns with your therapist. A therapist can help you understand what you can expect from counselling and what counselling can achieve for you.
