IS HYPNOTHERAPY RECOGNISED BY THE NHS?

The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, recognises hypnotherapy as a complementary therapy. So while hypnotherapy is not considered a primary treatment for medical conditions, it could be advised as a supplement to conventional medical treatments for certain issues. While the NHS does not typically fund hypnotherapy, some patients may be referred to licensed hypnotherapists as part of a broader treatment plan for conditions like anxiety, stress or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Hypnotherapy’s role in managing psychological aspects of these conditions makes it a valuable complement to standard medical approaches. Additionally, many private healthcare providers offer hypnotherapy as part of their coverage, making it more accessible for those seeking alternative therapies.

Can you get hypnotherapy on the NHS?

Hypnotherapy could be recommended by a doctor, clinician, or healthcare professional as part of a treatment plan for conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and a number of other physical and mental health concerns, or for addiction treatment such as smoking, drinking, pornography or drugs. Hypnotherapy may be provided by an NHS therapist or practitioner in some cases.

It should be noted that not all NHS services offer hypnotherapy and access to hypnotherapy services may vary depending on the specific area or region. If you are interested in exploring hypnotherapy as a treatment option, it would be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor or healthcare provider to find out if it could be an appropriate addition to your treatment plan.
