WHAT ARE THE FOUR TYPES OF HYPNOSIS?

There are many different ways of categorising hypnosis, but a commonly used framework is this:

How many different types of hypnosis are there does hypnosis work on everyone?
  1. Traditional hypnosis: This is probably the most commonly recognised form of hypnosis. In traditional hypnosis, the hypnotist will induce a trance state through the use of guided imagery and suggestions. The individual's level of suggestibility is heightened, and they are more receptive to accepting positive suggestions for change.

  2. Ericksonian hypnosis: This type of hypnosis was developed by the psychologist Milton H. Erickson. It emphasises the use of indirect suggestions and metaphors to bypass the conscious mind and access the unconscious. The hypnotist could use stories, anecdotes, or other language patterns as a way to induce a trance state and promote positive change in an individual.

  3. Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) hypnosis: NLP hypnosis is a form of psychotherapy, which incorporates hypnosis alongside other techniques in order to change patterns of thought and behaviour. It uses a combination of language and communication in order to access the unconscious, enabling the individual to promote change.

  4. Cognitive-Behavioural hypnosis: this type of hypnosis combines cognitive behaviour therapy techniques with hypnosis. This helps individuals to overcome any negative thought patterns and behaviours they are experiencing. The hypnotist could use suggestion alongside guided imagery in order to help the individual visualise positive outcomes, enabling them to change their behaviour.

These categories are not mutually exclusive and hypnotherapists may incorporate various elements of different types of hypnosis in the practice, depending on the individual needs of their client.
